The songs I can't stop listening to 4/26/13

1. Echospace - "Empyrean"
2. Mobius Band - "Friends Like These"
3. Vivaldi: Violin Concerto In E Minor, RV 277, "Il Favorito" - 3. Allegro (Elizabeth Blumenstock & the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra)
4. Nicolas Jaar - "Keep Me There"
5. Louis Armstrong & Jack Teagarden - "Rockin' Chair"
6. Cher - "Song For The Lonely" (Illicit Radio Version)
7. Suckers - "A Mind I Knew"
8. Susie Hansen - "No te metas conmigo"
9. The xx - "Chained"

Some electronic music this week. Some Vivaldi. Some Latin music. Cher.

We start with some chill electronic something or other from Echospace. I think this is what the kids call "dubstep," maybe.

There's lots of gray shades
But that don't make black the same as white
You said it feels good
Like that makes everything all right
But I don't blame you
You were only looking out for yourself
History's proven
That that's what we do best

Every recording I hear from the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra seems to take the music to the very edge of its possibilities. Stunning Vivaldi.

More electronic something or other. Nicolas Jaar is mesmerizing.

Louis Armstrong...

Oh, Cher.

Dancing late
We keep going on first dates
Underneath your sheets
Sleight of hand and daring feats
The pain just peels
Blooms confetti color fields
The sun rolls up
Rolling like a paper cup

Salsa music or something.

I watched you breathe in
And I wished you'd stop
Only for long enough
Long enough

[...]

If a feeling appears
If your mind should sway
It's not a secret you should keep
I won't let you slip away

The songs I can't stop listening to 4/19/13

1. ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead - "Source Tags And Codes"
2. Justin Bieber - "Boyfriend"
3. The Kinks - "Alcohol"
4. Patricia Petibon - Glück: Armide. Act 5. "Le perfide Renaud ... Quand le barbare"
5. Jessi Alexander - "So Wrong" (Patsy Cline cover)
6. Lady Gaga - "The Queen"
7. Spiritualized® - "Too Late"
8. Courtney Jaye - "Say Oh Say"

You picked me up and we went for a drive
Into the stained glass cavern of the night
You turn to say, your eyes fixed on the rows
Take me from this place I know
The ruined landscapes that I once called home

No profound lyrics whatsoever, but I can't listen to this song anymore without thinking of Anne Frank.

Oh demon alcohol
Sad memories I cannot recall...

A glorious aria from Patricia Petibon.

I've been so wrong, for so long
Thought I could live without the love that you give
I was wrong, oh, so wrong

Blah blah blah, Lady Gaga attempting to write profound lyrics. Fun song, though.

My momma said when she got so concerned
don't play with fire and you'll never get burned
don't touch the flame and you'll never find out
my momma said that's what love is all about

If you like Neko Case, you like Courtney Jaye.

The songs I can't stop listening to 4/12/13

1. Frazey Ford - "Firecracker"
2. Amy LaVere - "Often Happens"
3. How To Dress Well - "Us In The Sense Of Forever"
4. Barenaked Ladies - "Blame It On Me"
5. God Help The Girl (Neil Hannon & Catherine Ireton) - "Perfection As A Hipster"
6. Cher - "Heart Of Stone"
7. Cold War Kids - "God, Make Up Your Mind"

Hallelujah
The sparks flew up to heaven
They saw my smile
I was laughin' so hard

Hallelujah
The sparks flew up to heaven
And I left them sober
People with their cold hearts

Often happens when it's getting dark
My mind starts telling me little lies
Like all of this is leading up to some paradise

And we're not talking 'cause you don't have the time
My heart keeps lying, saying I'll be fine

I've been wasting countless hours
Make believing you'd be coming 'round
I've been wasting countless days
On something clearly out of my power

Let's talk about gender, baby
Let's talk about you and me

I wax poetic as you're waxing your legs
You say there's a traitor among us

They never met, the singer and the swinger
She walked in, they walked around each other
Fighting for the mirror and smiling
She was awkward
I was tongue-tied
She was goofy

Don't you sometimes
Wish your heart was a heart of stone

God make up your mind
Do you wanna play fair
Or should I take what's mine?

The songs I can't stop listening to 4/5/13

This list is all over the place. It's really, really good though. It's very me, where I am at this moment in my life.

1. Howlin' Wolf - "Spoonful"
2. Björk - "Pagan Poetry"
3. Fleet Foxes - "Grown Ocean"
4. Michael Jackson - "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough"
5. The Kills - "Black Rooster (Fuck and Fight)"
6. Brad Paisley - "Time Well Wasted"
7. Wolf Gang - "Pyramid Song" (Radiohead cover)
8. Yo La Tengo - "Pass The Hatchet, I Think I'm Goodkind"
9. Phish - "Heavy Things"
10. Cat Power - "Where Is My Love"

Just a little spoon of your precious love
Satisfies my soul...

He offers
a handshake
Crooked
Five fingers
They form a pattern
Yet to be matched

[...]

This time
I'm going to keep it to myself
This time
I'm going to keep me all to myself
And he makes me want to hand myself over...

I know someday the smoke will all burn off
All these voices I'll someday have turned off
I will see you someday when I've woken
I'll be so happy just to have spoken
I'll have so much to tell you about it

Keep on with the force don't stop
Don't stop 'til you get enough...

The young snake's got my name

I'm not coming home again...

It was time well wasted
And there's no way I'd trade a few more things that I could've crossed off my list
For a day I'll never forget
No, I didn't get a thing done
But I sure soaked up every minute of the memory we were makin'
And I count it all as time well wasted

I jumped in the river, what did I see?
Black-eyed angels swam with me
A moon full of stars and astral cars
And all the figures I used to see

All my lovers were there with me
All my past and futures
And we all went to heaven in a little row boat
There was nothing to fear and nothing to doubt

It's easy to be quiet
But harder than it seems...

Things have fallen down on me
Heavy things I could not see...

Where is my love?
Where is my love?
Horses galloping
Bring him to me.
