The songs I can't stop listening to 1/18/13

Odd assortment this week. The iTunes shuffle got fixated on remixes.

1. Nikkiya - "When I Was High"
2. Icky Blossoms - "Babes"
3. Avey Tare - "Ghost Of Books"
4. Benjamin Francis Leftwich - "Pictures (GZUS Remix)"
5. The Dead Weather - "Treat Me Like Your Mother (Diplo Remix)"
6. Gotye ft. Kimbra - "Somebody That I Used To Know (Bombs Away Remix)"
7. Rosco Bandana - "Woe Is Me"
8. Young Buffalo - "Nature Boy"
9. Metronomy - "Everything Goes My Way"

Nikkiya is just the bomb.

I can't decide whether this is great or annoys the shit out of me or both.

Avey Tare is part of Animal Collective. This song is weird as hell, but it pulls you in after a few listens. Also: sad. Also: I enjoy that way it takes a good minute to figure out what time signature the song is written in. (6/8, by the way.)

Benjamin Francis Leftwich writes the most beautiful songs. This remix doesn't fuck with his "boy and a guitar" thing. It just adds a few little elements, and adds to the pretty.

Jack White, etc. One of those remixes that really deconstructs a song and makes it new.

The ubiquitous song. Still a a great, uplifting, kiss my ass message that I relate to, quite a lot, and this is a GREAT remix.

Country-fied septet from Mississippi. Somehow it is on my iTunes. I like, I like, I like.

Young Buffalo is also from Mississippi. This song is catchy as hell. I don't know how I feel about them using the title "Nature Boy," as this is not a cover of the famous song by that name. That's kind of a specific title, I think.

Stupid indie love song. It's cute, and also kind of annoying, but in a cute way.

The songs I can't stop listening to 1/11/13

1. Run-D.M.C. - "Rock Box"
2. The Supremes - "When The Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes"
3. Tori Amos - "Give"
4. The Field Mice - "Let's Kiss And Make-Up"
5. dälek - "Corrupt (Knuckle Up)"
6. Brandi Carlile - "If There Was No You"
7. John Denver - "For Baby (For Bobbie)"
8. Remi Kabaka, Biddy Wright, Dele Okonkwo and Joni Haastrup - "The Quest" (from Black Goddess)

We start with Run-D.M.C, because why not, and we need to dance a little bit more.

The Supremes' first #1 single!

"Give" is probably my favorite of Tori Amos's later songs.

So you heard
I crossed over the line
Do I have regrets?
Well, not yet
there are some,
some who give Blood
I give love
I give
...
There are some,
some whose give
twists itself to take
they mis-take
who, what made up the line
some say it was pain
or was it shame

This is just a great song. St. Etienne probably made it more famous than The Field Mice did, but they were the original. Late '80's/early 90's brit-pop that you might have missed.

Listening to a lot more hip-hop these days.

Just a really sweet love song from Brandi...

And another sweet love song, from  John Denver...

And then we close with eight minutes of Afro-Jazz. (Actually, there are 19 minutes of Afro-Jazz in the clip below, but the piece I've been listening to is the first eight minutes.)

The songs I can't stop listening to 1/4/13

First random mix of the new year. The Vampire Weekend song starts it off well. Who gives a fuck about an Oxford Comma, indeed?

1. Vampire Weekend - "Oxford Comma"
2. Nirvana - "The Man Who Sold The World" (David Bowie cover)
3. Bon Iver (with Feist & Colin Stetson) - "Train Song" (Vashti Bunyan cover)
4. Tori Amos - "Cruel" (Shady Feline Mix)
5. The Mountain Goats - "Raja Vocative"
6. PS I Love You (ft. Diamond Rings) - "Leftovers"
7. Sam Bush - "Same Ol' River" (Matt Black cover)
8. Eleanor Friedberger - "Inn Of The Seventh Ray"
9. Dominique Young Unique - "Music Time"

Feist and Bon Iver singing this Vashti Bunyan song is wow:

It's so many miles and so long since I've met you
Don't even know what I'll find when I get to you
But suddenly now, I know where I belong
It's many hundred miles but it won't be long

dance with the sufis celebrate your top ten in the charts of pain
lover brother bougainvillea my vine twists around your need
Even the rain is sharp like today as you sh-sh-shock me sane
no cigarettes only peeled HAVANAS for you i can be cruel
i don't know why
why can't my ba.ll.oo.n stay up in a perfectly windy sky
i can be cruel i don't know why

a bird you would've liked brought the sky down,
but it was useless to see without you around...

I've got your number and I know that you've got mine
Ten digits scrawled upon your skin
And if you call I will be waiting on the line
Ready to come over
I'll be leftover

NINE MINUTE BLUEGRASM, LIZ.

Can we keep one eye open and one eye closed on the rest of the world?
I don't think so!

DANCE.
