The songs I can't stop listening to 3/29/13

Hi, this list is all over the place, but the theme seems to be taking flight, or love, or death, or something.

1. Thieving Irons - "So Long"
2. Blitzen Trapper - "Big Adventure"
3. Natalie Cole - "Almost Like Being In Love" (orig. from Brigadoon, made popular by Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, others)
4. Matt Morris - "Live Forever"
5. Tiger & Woods - "Gin Nation" (Rework of Imagination's "Music and Lights")
6. The Chemical Brothers - "Galaxy Bounce"
7. Nicki Minaj ft. Kanye West - "Blazin'"
8. NWA - "Fuck Tha Police"
9. Tori Amos - "Daniel" (Elton John cover)

If we could walk on water
Or bleed of honey
The crushing sound of the walls coming down
If I lift you up, will you still be around?

A flock of birds captured me
I had a big adventure
Wish I could remember
Won't you help me to remember please?

What a day this has been
What a rare mood I'm in
Why, it's almost like being in love

We're looking for the way to make this better
Looking for a way to change the weather
Whether you or I survive tonight
I promise you that I will love you like we're gonna live forever

Let it all fade away
Forget about tomorrow...

Something about bouncing around galaxies...

Feels like I'm blazin'...

Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth
and nothin' but the truth, so help your black ass?

Daniel my brother, you are older than me
Do you still feel the pain of the scars that won't heal
Your eyes have died, but you see more than I
Daniel you're a star in the face of the sky...

The songs I can't stop listening to 3/22/13

1. Tori Amos - "A Silent Night With You"
2. We Are Scientists - "Rules Don't Stop"
3. The Gaslight Anthem - "Great Expectations"
4. Weekend - "The One You Want"
5. The Mountain Goats - "Red River Valley" (Traditional)
6. Bright Eyes - "Soul Singer In A Session Band"
7. Múm - "We Have A Map Of The Piano"
8. The Ponys - "Double Vision"
9. The Bug feat. Ricky Ranking - "Murder We"
10. The Rolling Stones - "Shine A Light"

A Tori Amos holiday song in the middle of March. Why not? And it's a love song. Again, why not?
I just want to spend
A silent night with you...

And then the obligatory "MW" song...

Don't be alarmed
It's not the end of the world
If we're breaking the rules it's fine
I disregard this kind of problem all the time
It's not as if it's going to kill anyone
There's no victim if there's no crime
Just draw another if you think we've crossed the line

[...]

Although it may seem unconventional sometimes
Indiscretion is worth a try
If you just play along I promise we'll be fine
So leave your hang-ups back at the door
When you and I are down on the floor
Will you know what to do about it
You know what to do about it

[...]

It's not as bad as they say
If this is such a mistake
Why does it seem to make you so damn happy?
This is no time to behave
Let's both get carried away
If there's a price to be paid
It won't stop me

I learned about the blues from this kitten I knew
Her hair was raven and her heart was like a tomb

My heart's like a wound

Can't really understand the words, but this band is sort of awesome. There's The Cure in there, there's My Bloody Valentine...

From this valley they say you are going
We will miss your bright eyes and sweet smile
For they say you are taking the sunshine
That had brightened all our pathways for a while.

Just like the soul singer in a session band
Wailed like an infant atop a white baby grand
We'll need every sand bag and every man
To save the soul singer in the session band

Please don't flow this fast
You hold a little hum
I'll bottle sounds of me for you

Please don't flow so fast
You little mountain din
I'll bottle piano sounds from you

My heart's on the brink, I thought you should know
And my body shakes, every time you show...

I can't decide if I like this song or not. English producer, reggae-influenced. I hate reggae. But this song is sort of...something.

May the good Lord shine a light on you
Make every song you sing your favorite tune
May the good Lord shine a light on you
Warm like the evening sun...

The songs I can't stop listening to 3/15/13

1. Stone Temple Pilots - "Pretty Penny"
2. Fort Atlantic - "Let Your Heart Hold Fast"
3. Nirvana - "Oh, Me" (Meat Puppets cover)
4. SebastiAn feat. Mayer Hawthorne - "Love In Motion"
5. Kate Nash - "Mouthwash"
6. Tori Amos - "American Pie" (Don McLean cover)
7. Rage Against The Machine - "Freedom"
8. Delicate Cutters - "Los Angeles"

She was loved and we all will miss her...

To believe I walk alone
Is a lie that I've been told

So let your heart hold fast
For this soon shall pass
Like the high tide takes the sand

At the bitter end
Salt and liquid blend
From the corner of my eye...

I can't see the end of me
My whole expanse I cannot see
I formule infinity
And store it deep inside of me

The lyrics of this song are not poignant. Fun song, though.

And I'm singing "oh oh" on a Friday night
And I hope everything's gonna be alright

In the streets the children screamed
The lovers cried and the poets dreamed
But not a word was spoken
The church bells all were broken
And the three men I admire most
The Father, Son and the Holy Ghost
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died

Anger is a gift.

Fitting that the last song is basically a eulogy.

The songs I can't stop listening to 3/8/13

1. The Temper Trap - "Love Lost"
2. Heartless Bastards - "Out To Sea"
3. Chromeo feat. Solange Knowles - "When The Night Falls (Breakbot Remix)"
4. Eartha Kitt with Henri Rene and his Orchestra - "C'est si bon (It's So Good)"

7. Pedro The Lion - "Rapture"
8. Rafter - "Beauty, Beauty (Dominique Leone Remix)"
9. Laura Gibson - "La Grande"
10. Louis Armstrong - "Dippermouth Blues"

Your walls are up
Too cold to touch it
Your walls are up
Too high to climb

I know it's hard
But I can still hear it beating
So if you flash your heart
I won't mistreat it
I promise

Our love was lost
In the rubble are all the things
That you've, you've been dreaming of
Keep me in mind
When you are ready
I am here
To take you every time

_____

And I was searching for a mystery to hold onto
I had been sinking underneath the paper skies I drew
Oh, a rip, another tear, it all divides
And I am drowning, drowning in frustration

I'm out at sea and I cannot stop the tide...

_____

Let's try to cross paths...

_____

C'est si bon
De partir n'importe où
Bras dessus bras dessous
En chantant des chansons
C'est si bon
De se dire des mots doux
De petit rien du tout
Mais qui en disent long

_____

Tell me that the chance I take won't blow up in my face...

Baby you got me don't worry your pretty little heart...

THIS SONG IS SO AWESOME.

_____

Never knew love like this
The wind, the moon, the earth, the sky
Sky so high
Never knew pain like this
Everything die, then die
Never knew love like this
The sun, the sea, you and I
Never knew pain, never knew shame
Now I know why

_____

Hands down, my favorite song out of this mix:

This is how we multiply
Pity that it's not my wife
The friction and skin
The trembling sigh

This is how our bodies move
With everything that we could lose
Pushing us deeper still
The sheets and the sweat
The seed and the spill
The bitter pill yet undiscovered

[...]

Oh, my sweet rapture
I hear Jesus calling me home

Finally the chance to breathe
Reaching for the fallen sheets
Collapsing in a glowing heap
We've gone too far
We've done too much
We have to quit it
Just one more kiss
Just one more touch
Please ten more minutes...

_____

Live in the moment
Live in the now...

Beauty beauty
It's hard to get the things that you love

_____

When the moon carves a trail down the pine-bearded hills
And a ghost-wind hollers to the early morn
And the starlings return to the old sugar mill
Stealing their corn from the grower's field

Oh, I'll be no more

_____

And some Louis Armstrong while we mull all that over.

The songs I can't stop listening to 3/1/13

1. Phish - "Gotta Jibboo"
2. Zola Jesus - "Trust Me"
3. The Black Swans - "Portsmouth, Ohio"
4. Ferraby Lionheart - "Before We're Dead"
5. HEALTH - "Severin"
6. Antony & The Johnsons - "For Today I Am A Boy"
7. Waterdeep - "Not Looking Good"
8. Faith Hill - "This Kiss"
9. Tori Amos - "Agent Orange"

Yes, this list starts with Phish, because I am 17 years old in 1997. Fuck off. And Faith Hill, just because people who don't like that song are stupid.

Mama sing sing that ya gotta jibboo.
Papa sing gotta jibboo

Mama sing sing thatcha gotta jibboo
Gotta jibboo and keep on drinking, too.

Pure poetry. Here, watch Phish jam about absolutely nothing for ten minutes.

In the meantime I'll be here
Trust me.
I know that you're afraid but I'm here
Hanging on
Trust me.

Nobody's supposed to die
Three days before the Fourth of July
Especially while the sun's still in the sky...

Run faster than the day
Take away this skin and bone
I've got no home

[...]

You can be high
You can be low
Under tree over the world
I still believe there's time to live before we're dead

Loudness that gives way to a certain kind of loud beauty.

Just about the most beautiful, soulful song about being transgender I've ever heard.

It's not looking good for us
What made it through the flood is now covered in rust
It's not really working like I thought
But I can't take it back like something I wish I'd never bought

Admit it. This song is great.

And we end with one of Tori's little tiny short songs.
